art center of the bluegrass to expand and establish a national glass museum

In 2023, the Art Center of the Bluegrass will restore and renovate the 12,600 square foot, structurally sound, historic property adjacent to our current location at 401 W. Main Street. As the Art Center approaches its 20th anniversary, the restoration and renovation of this second building – 415 W. Main Street – will generate new cultural opportunities for
community members and visitors alike, while dramatically transforming the region’s creative arts ecosystem. Our vision for 415 W. Main is to expand the Art Center’s dynamic and inclusive arts community while preserving the legacy of Danville’s internationally famous glassmaker Stephen Rolfe Powell.

Project Goals:

Preserve a large, historic but declining building in the center of Danville by transforming it into a vibrant, active center for the arts.

Establish a glass museum that will honor the extensive artistic legacy of Stephen R. Powell, that will include other glass works by artists such as Lino Tagliapietra and Dale Chihuly, and that will attract visitors from around the state and glass enthusiasts from around the world.

Establish a glassblowing studio and educational programming to share both the history of glass and its contemporary artistic applications.

Double the footprint and space of the Art Center of the Bluegrass, allowing for a needed expansion of art programs, private studios, the gift gallery, and possibly an eating/drinking establishment.

Restore the 3rd-floor Ballroom as a new, elegant downtown space for large art classes and events, town meetings, music events, weddings, etc.

“This is a community effort. The Art Center is the catalyst, but the benefit and impact of the expansion will benefit our entire region and state, and it’s exciting to see so much support as we set forth.” – Niki Kinkade, Executive Director
