This Wednesday at Lunch with the Arts, we’re excited to have Lorinda Jones presenting a half performance, half musical therapy session here at the Arts Center.
First, she will perform songs on both harp and dulcimer by composer Turlough O’Carolan, a famous Irish harper. (The minstrel lived more than 300 years ago and is considered by many to be Ireland’s national composer.) In the second half, she’ll demonstrate a sample music therapy program, which will require some audience participation!
Lorinda has performed across the state and the country both solo and as one half of the Celtic duo Chattering Magpies. Her musical styles range fromancient Celtic and old-time Appalachian to today’s folk and pop music. She also teaches classes and workshops throughout the year, and is owner of Music Therapy Services of Central Kentucky.
Beyond performing, Jones’ work and responsibilities include owner of LosNotes Publications, director of The Heartland Dulcimer Club and Heartland Harp Ensemble, and member of both VSA Kentucky and the Kentucky Centerʼs Arts in Healing program.
As a triple-threat (performer, educator and musical therapist) with this long resume and an extensive touring schedule, it seems to me like she must have her hands full all of the time. Earlier this week I asked her, what’s the best part of your job (er, jobs)?
“I love what I do, and feel so fortunate to have work that is meaningful to me, and something that I look forward to doing each day. Like all jobs, there are pitfalls… but I feel that my entire career has been a gradual movement toward discovering what I can share with others and in a way that continues to challenge me, excite me, motivate me and continue moving me toward an even brighter path.â€
She has written books and recorded several CDs, some of which will be on sale Wednesday. So bring a little extra spending money, bring your lunch (or reserve it now) and bring your self down to the Arts Center next Wednesday at noon. We’ll see you there!
