Meet the Artists #6

Sitting at my desk facing the 3rd floor window in my home office I’m reminded that in less than a week, I’ll be looking out on a Centre College parking lot that will be filled with vehicles belonging to the musicians, audience members and VISUAL ARTISTS who will make our town of Danville their home for a few days in the beginning of June!

I’ve enjoying introducing you to the artists who are exhibiting at the 2019 Danville Art Festival on June 8th & 9th. Taking these short journeys into their work as artists has me thinking of the importance of creativity and the arts in our society.

One of our featured artists in this segment, Stacy Chinn, writes about creativity in her artist statement by quoting Rollo May’s thoughts on the subject “Creativity…is the encounter of the intensely conscious human being with his or her world.” Looking at Stacy’s artwork, I see her interaction with society and the environment and her website, offers examples of her work. I see the colors and shapes of the world around us reflected in her ceramics and jewelry.  I’m looking forward to seeing more when I have the opportunity to explore her booth!

In my own life, I find myself searching for creative pieces of wearable art. Handmade clothing, fabrics that have been hand-dyed and handwoven fascinate me, and unique handcrafted jewelry is no exception. Our final artist, Michelle Norvell, designed silver jewelry with unexpected detail and surprise. Pendants that contain intricate designs of interwoven leaves and flowers and geometrically designed containing bursts of sparkle and brilliance are among the pieces that she’ll be displaying at her booth.

The Kentucky Arts Council has designated Danville, KY as one of only six Creative Districts in Kentucky saying “Art in all forms thrives in Kentucky Creative Districts. You’ll feel right at home – even if you’re just stopping by.” Whether you’re a resident of Danville and Boyle County or just “stopping by”, we hope you enjoy your time at this year’s Danville Art Festival and the Great American Brass Band Festival!

Artists booths will be lining the sidewalk leading from the Centre College Library to Walnut St. (open only to pedestrian traffic during the Festivals). Creative Districts in Kentucky are known for their vibrant and welcoming communities and we think you’ll find just that here in our community this June!
