Field Trips

The Art Center of the Bluegrass is excited to offer virtual field trips to our fall 2020 exhibit – “En Plein Air.” This exhibit features landscape art created by regional artists during the summer of 2020.

These virtual field trips provide a robust, standards-aligned educational experience for students, whether they are learning in the classroom or from home. Students will enjoy a guided virtual exploration of the exhibit with discussion facilitated by an arts educator and will also have the opportunity to create a piece of original artwork.

The field trip experience happens in three parts, two of which can be completed asynchronously. After you register your class, we will contact you to provide the videos and details about accessing the online gallery talk.

#1 – Recorded Video Introduction
Prior to the live Gallery Talk, students watch an original 5-minute video “Why Paint Outside” created by the Art Center to introduce the concept of plein air artwork – and why this new style was groundbreaking.

#2 – Live Interactive Video Gallery Talk
Teachers will schedule a time for their class to participate in a live video Gallery Talk – either from the classroom or from their individual homes. Students will explore the exhibit and respond to the artwork via an interactive discussion facilitated by Art Center staff. *

#3 – Hands-On Landscape Collage Project
After the Gallery Talk, students will create their own original landscape collage. An instructional video will be provided and free supply kits are available from the Art Center. Contact us to discuss supply distribution for virtual learners.

logistics, cost, and scheduling

Class Size – In order to keep the virtual gallery talk dynamic and interactive, we are asking that classes schedule one at a time, with a limit of 25 students per group. If you feel like you must schedule more students at the same time, please contact us to talk about logistics.

Cost – Our exhibit field trips typically cost $6 per student. We currently have funding available to waive the fee for all 2nd and 3rd graders. We have some additional funding for other grades on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact us to find out if we can waive the fee for your students!

Scheduling – Contact us to schedule your field trip! We are also offering a FREE public field trip on Thursday, September 17th. Reserve your spot at (choose “workshops”).
